Vitoria-Gasteiz is a city of 250,000 about 40-45 min by car from Oñati. It’s the closest sizeable city to Oñati and has a full range of hotels and other accommodations. One can get to Oñati by bus from Vitoria-Gasteiz (see below), but one has to change buses in Arrasate-Mondragon.
Bilbao is the Basque Country’s largest city, twice the size of Vitoria-Gasteiz. It’s 55-60 min by car from Oñati.
PUBLIC BUSES:(Bus companies in the Basque Country use “Arrasate”, the Basque name for the town of Mondragon or use both with a hyphen: “Arrasate-Mondragon”.)
- From the Bilbao-Loiu airport
- to Arrasate-Mondragon – the bus company is AVANZA. (approx 1 hour)
- to the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz – the bus company is LA UNION.
- To the city of Bilbao – the bus company is BIZKAIBUS. (Only in Spanish or Basque, not in English)
- From Arrasate-Mondragon to Oñati – the company is LURRALDEBUS. (Switch the language to English by clicking where it says "castellano" at the top left)
The bus stop for the conference venue is called "Posta Geltokia". It's across the street from the post office, seen in the photo below. The conference venue at Mondragon's Faculty of Business is to your right, if you are facing the post office, about 150 meters away. - From Vitoria-Gasteiz (or small towns near Mondragon such as Eskoriatza or Aretxabaleta) to Arrasate-Mondragon and then to Oñati - the company is LURRALDEBUS. (One has to change buses in Arrasate-Mondragon.) Again, the bus stop in Oñati is called "Posta Geltokia". See photo and directions above.
TAXIS are plentiful in the cities, and at their airports, to go to Arrasate-Mondragon or elsewhere, BUT taxis are very scarce in the Arrasate-Mondragon area and often have to be reserved the day before. Uber exists in the Basque Country but seems much more limited and is more highly regulated than in other places.
PRIVATE BUS PROVIDED BY THE IAFEP CONFERENCE:The conference organization will provide a bus to and from the conference venue each day in the morning and evening that will follow the route described below in the morning and the reverse in the evening. It is not viable to include the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz in the bus route.
- Hotel Sukha at 7:30am.
- Mondragon, the main bus stop next to the hospital, called "Zalduspe/Ospitalea" at 7:50am.
- Oñati, "Posta Geltokia" stop at 8:10am. Get off for the conference here (unless you are staying in the Arantzazu hotels in which case you get on the bus next), see photo and directions up above in "public buses".
- Arantzazu Sanctuary (for those staying at the Hotel Sindika, or the Aterpetxea or Casa Rural Goiko Benta) in the parking lot, next to the gift shop, 8:30am.

The evening return bus schedule remains to be determined as each of the three evenings' schedule will probably be different given the conference dinner on Thursday the 9th and the co-op visits on Friday the 10th.
